The Indomitable Lions' skipper says the Spaniard has done a good job for the team and he wants him to stay on as the Fecafoot set the stage for his successor
Cameroon captain Samuel Eto'o has heaped praise on the team's coach Javier Clemente, who the Football Federation (Fecafoot) are preparing to fire for failing to qualify the Indomitable Lions to the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations.
Speaking to Magic FM - a Younde-based radio station - over the weekend, the Anzhi forward said he was particularly thrilled with the performance of Clemente and his collaborators during the 2012 Afcon qualifying adventure, even though they were ultimately unsuccessful.
"I'm proud and impressed. I love what coach Clemente did for us, for Cameroon," Eto'o said. "If we didn't have such an experienced coach and his assistants Jacques Songo'o and Francois Omam Biyik, it would have been very difficult to resolve the numerous problems we had in the team.
"They helped strengthen the cohesion that was missing. They helped inculcate the desire to play for team, for the nation, in us, in the youths, and that is what we really need to progress, not just talent. And as we look ahead towards the qualifiers of the 2014 World Cup, I would like to thank Clemente and his staff for what they have done so far, and wish this collective adventure to continue" he said.
However, the four-time African Footballer of the Year, refused to comment on the possible successors of the Spaniard - Denis Lavagne, Martin Ndtoungou Mpille, Pierre Mbarga and Patrick Mboma – deeming them as mere propositions for now.
"I'm yet to really believe these guys are being vetted for the job. Well, if the Fecafoot think this will be the best option for the team in their own eyes, I'll reserve my remarks until when it becomes official," he said.
Reports say Frenchman Denis Lavagne, coach of Coton Sport, is likely to replace Clemente, but some voices are calling for a local hand instead of another expatriate.
Cameroon will play three friendly matches next month:
Cameroon - Sudan: November11
Cameroon - Morocco: November 13
Cameroon - Algeria: November 15
