Raul fires Schalke up to second
Raul scored the only goal of the game as Schalke moved up to second in the Bundesliga with a hard-fought 1-0 home win over Borussia Monchengladbach.
Raul scored his first goal since committing his future to the club in the 64th minute. Last week, Raul revealed he would see out the final year of his contract, after Schalke turned down a bid from Blackburn, and he celebrated with a strike that moves the Royal Blues level on points with leaders Bayern Munich and Werder Bremen.
Previous leaders Gladbach, who have not won at Schalke since August 1992, lost their first game of the season to drop to fifth place.
Hannover missed the chance to go top of the table for the first time since 1969 after being held to a 1-1 draw at home by Mainz.
Sami Allagui's early goal for Mainz was equalised by Mohammed Abdellaoue in the 30th minute, in a game which featured three shots against the woodwork.
The result leaves Hannover one point off the lead and one point better off than their opponents.
