Manchester United's big Michu mistake leaves questions to be asked
Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson let slip a revealing statement ahead of the Swansea game...
"I had never even heard of him before he came to Swansea. In fact, I think I am going to have a word with our scouting department!"
Who was he talking about?
Why none other than Premier League top scorer, Michu.
The Spaniard made sure Sir Alex knew exactly who he was at the end of yesterday's game, netting an equaliser in a 1-1 draw at the Liberty Stadium.
Taking the Manchester United manager's comments at face value, it does ask questions about the club's scouting system in Spain.
It isn't to say United should have signed the midfielder, but the manager should at least have been aware of him.
Michu was the highest scoring midfielder in Spain last season, and was available for a cut-down price of £2 million.
A gem, but not an especially well-hidden one.
But hold on...
"Manchester United scouts have been watching Michu, 26, and London-based agents DBW have also spoken with several other English clubs, including Liverpool, about him."
The above comes from a Daily Mail article published in May this year.
Either United weren't monitoring him and the Mail were wrong, or the scouting department made a big mistake by not actually going onto recommend the player to Sir Alex himself.
So the whole episode shows Ferguson's knowledge of the Spanish market/La Liga is not very good, a concern considering the big match upcoming against Real Madrid?
Do they need to shake-up the scouting system? When was the last time United signed an outfield player from La Liga anyway?
The answer takes us back to 2004... A certain Gerard Pique.
Considering the talent available from Spain, in Mata, Cazorla and Michu, currently running roughshod over the Premier League - Perhaps its time United got in on the act.
